CERCA's Slough Rehabilitation Project

Water and Substrate Sampling

As reported already in several of my last year's monthly newsletters one of the proposed nature trail components will be the rehabilitation of the 2 acres slough located along the trail between the abandoned CN railway line and the Causeway access road to the Westcan Terminal. The first step of the rehabilitation project will be a water and substrate quality analysis of the slough, the results of which to guide our follow-up work. We will test  PH values, salinity, total metals (from water and sediment), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and dioxins and furons. The total cost of the quality test will be approximately $4k as indicated by Maxxam Laboratories of Burnaby to be in charge of the sample analysis. The costs will be covered by funds raised at our 2015 VIP dinner. The samples will be taken by CERCA volunteers during the last week in January.
