We placed 40 nesting boxes along the trail using existing  fence posts in the salt marsh north of the trail and ancient but still solid dolphins along the shoreline of the Cowichan River South Fork hoping that purple martin and tree swallows will appreciate our effort. The numbered boxes are facing the trail for easy recognition of the numbers to be used for monitoring and annual cleaning of the boxes.  We used only yellow cedar for the boxes hoping to outlive me.We donated 15 additional boxes to the BC Land Trust to be used in other parts of the Cowichan Estuary on land managed by the Trust.
