Christmas Letter from the Chair with past year’s reflections

Dear CERCA members and friends of the Cowichan Estuary,

The concept of “sustainability” is often seen as modern, but its roots trace back centuries to wisdom like that of Democritus of Abdera, who cautioned against greed and excess, urging moderation as key to harmony with nature. His reflections on sufficiency and happiness resonate deeply today, as we grapple with the impacts of overconsumption and environmental challenges.

While the state of our planet remains precarious, we at CERCA remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the estuary and fostering hope through action. This letter reflects on our efforts over the past year and highlights our 2024 activities as we continue working for the benefit of nature and our community.

In this Christmas letter, we highlight the letter from the Chair, detailing milestones in CERCA’s work from 2024:

  • Microplastics Research

  • Bioaccumulation Models

  • Fatty Acid Analysis

  • Mariners Island Salt Marsh Restoration

  • Trail Maintenance

These initiatives underscore CERCA’s dedication to fostering a healthier estuary and providing a knowledge base for future conservation efforts. Read on to learn more about these projects, the challenges we face, and the collaborative spirit that drives our work.

We wish you a festive Christmas season, good health and happiness for 2025, peace in the world, and a serious effort by all Nations to implement the Paris Agreement and all the other agreements reached to save our planet.
