Phase II of CERCA’s Microplastic Study in the Cowichan Estuary

Summary Report by Dr. Bernhard Juurlink

Phase II of CERCA’s Microplastic Study expands our understanding of microplastic pollution in the Cowichan Estuary. Building on Phase I, which found significant microplastic contamination in mudflat sediments, Phase II increases the number of sampling sites and investigates the microplastic content in varnish clams.

Key findings include:

  • The highest microplastic concentration was found around the Westcan Terminal.

  • Plastic fibers were the most prevalent microparticles.

  • Varnish clams showed significant microplastic contamination, particularly polyethylene and polyester.

These findings highlight the ongoing issue of microplastic pollution and its impact on the estuarine ecosystem and food chain.
