Cowichan Estuary Annotated Bibliography

Cowichan Estuary Ecological Health: Annotated Bibliography

The Cowichan Estuary has been the focus of considerable scientific study over the past four decades, including both published papers and a large number of ‘grey’ literature materials and research produced by organizations outside of the traditional commercial or academic publishing and distribution channels. In 2004, the Cowichan Community Land Trust Society (CCLT) conducted a comprehensive literature review to consolidate research and scientific reports on the Cowichan Estuary from the 1970s to 2003, in order to help assess and prioritize restoration and monitoring projects in the Cowichan Estuary. To do this, the CCLT identified studies mainly through contacts and referrals from individuals and organizations.

Here, the Cowichan Estuary and Conservation Association (CERCA) update the CCLT’s bibliography with the inclusion of available scientific literature on the ecological health of the Cowichan Estuary from 2003 to 2020. Original abstracts were used to annotate the bibliography. References are sorted under three headings: “research,” “restoration” and “planning,” and all material since 2003 has been included under the “research” and “restoration” headings. The additional material includes both published and grey literature; however, besides material provided directly by CERCA, papers and studies included here predominantly consist of those available by internet search, including the University of Victoria library, Google Scholar, and other web-based searches. While some contacts and referrals from individuals and organizations were established, more work is required to procure unpublished grey literature. As such, it is by no means an exhaustive review, but rather a working document that would benefit greatly from submissions from any organizations or individuals interested in contributing to an accessible and complete repository of scientific literature on the Cowichan Estuary.
