Art Show: "Estuary, the cradle of life"
CERCA and "Friends of the Cowichan Valley Public Art Gallery" (CVPAG) have come together to organize and implement an art show in Duncan. Focus of this show will be art work related to the estuary under the title "Estuary, the Cradle of Life". Artists from Vancouver Island and beyond have been invited to see and understand our estuaries in fresh ways. Because of this, interested artists have been guided through the Cowichan Estuary with the aim of creating art that opens their eyes, hearts and minds to this unique ecosystem.
Artists have submitted previous and new art objects; if chosen by the jury they will have the opportunity to show their work at the exhibit in March. Both contemporary and traditional work from 14 contributing artists in a variety of media will be on display. very encouraging.
CERCA will install its mobile estuary exhibition in a room adjacent to the Arbutus Gallery which hosts the art show at the Island Saving Center in Duncan. The estuary exhibition which had been produced by CERCA in close cooperation with the Royal BC Museum in 2013 has been on display before at the Duncan Forest Museum and the Vancouver Island Public Library.
This exciting art show that is open to the public throughout March, will also offer artist talks and lectures on the estuary. It is hoped that it will assist in heightening environmental awareness and a better understanding of the ecological and socio-cultural-economic importance of estuaries considered part of the most productive ecosystems of the earth. At the same time human-caused harmful impacts continue to threaten their ecological integrity.
